The Pex Tool Box - A Basic in Radiant Heat Installation

A pex tool is commonly used in the installation of radiant heating. PEX refers to the cross-linked polyethylene material which is preferred for radiant heat installations, due to its durability under extreme temperatures.

ABOUT PEX

PEX has been a popular product for use in radiant heating, plumbing and snow melt applications since its development in the 1960s. It is durable in temperatures varying from below freezing up to 200 degrees Fahrenheight. A number of different Pex tools are available specifically for use with this product, including pex crimping tools, PEX cutters, foam board staplers and clip guns.

Aside from its durability, PEX is very flexible, making it easy to install and service. The flexibility also makes it much quieter than standard rigid plumbing. The interior of the piping will not corrode like other plumbing materials, which is a common problem with many of the harsh plumbing chemicals. With fewer joints to repair, maintenance is much less expensive.

PEX APPLICATIONS

PEX is approved for use in all current model-plumbing codes. Some jurisdications may not have updated their codes. In those instances, contact the local authority having jurisdication to verify the acceptance of PEX plumbing applications.

PEX can be used for under slab applications and underground cold-water applications, but not for aboveground outdoor applications. When using PEX beneath a slab, the piping is supplied in coils to allow for a single, continuous length without the need for fittings. This is commonly done for radiant heating. In the slab, however, the PEX must be sleeved.

PEX is available in 1/4" to 1" Copper Tube Sizes. Some manufacturers offer up to 2" in diameter. The pressure rating is the same for all sizes.

TYPES OF PEX TOOLs

PEX cannot be joined with cement, solvent or heat fusion. All connections are mechanical.

There are two approved standard specifications for PEX connections, both of which are mechanical insert fittings: ASTM F 1807 and ASTM F 1960. THE ASTM F 1807 crimp fittings are most commonly used.

The PEX crimp tool is adjustable for use with PEX sizes 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1" and is compatible with copper crimp rings of appropriate sizes and crimp style PEX fittings.

The Go-No-Go gauge allows you to check connections and calibrate the crimp tool as necessary. The Crescent Wrench is used to change crimp jaws and calibrate the tool.

Pex Cutters cut the tubing and come in a variety of models. The heavy duty models come equipped with a ratched mechanism enabling the cutting of pipes up to 1-1/2" thick.

The PEX clamp tool is used with stainless steel cinch clamps up to 1" thick.

Pex Clip Guns are very convenient, holding up to 20 clips in 1/2" or 3/4" sizes. The gun is placed over the tubing and the handles presses down.

Foamboard staples are used for installations on top of styrofoam, polystyrene or polyurethane. They come in strips which are loaded into the foamboard stapler. The ends of the staples are arrow shaped for secure fitting into the foamboard.

You can purchase a PEX tool kit, which typically comes with most of the basics.
